Previously, I listed Ethical Culture-related podcasts in a separate entry, but I've decided in this latest revamp to fold those entries in with the others in this catch-all entry of items that might interest Unitarian Universalists and other religious liberals. Here, I'm going to list sites that podcast alongside sites that offer audio or video for download or streaming play and instead group them by affiliation. On this page, especially, I welcome suggestions for programs I might add -- just leave me a comment with the URL for a show and/or its feed, and maybe a comment about how you see it tying in with Unitarian Universalism.

Ethical Culture

If you're not familiar with Ethical Culture, it's a small humanist religious movement founded by educator and philanthropist Felix Adler in the 19th Century. Coming from a liberal/secular Jewish tradition, Adler didn't use typical Christian terminology in describing elements of congregational life -- groups are "societies" or "fellowships," not churches, and the address given from the lectern is a "platform," not a "sermon." The movement has no formal stance on the existence of a higher power, though in my admittedly limited experience, it tends to be even more humanist- and nontheist-oriented than Unitarian Universalism.

Bahá'í Faith

If Unitarian Universalism (and its parent movements, Unitarianism and Universalism) is a religion that emerged from the most liberal streams of Christianity and Ethical Culture is a religion that emerged from the most liberal streams of Judaism, then one could make a case that the Bahá'í Faith is their equivalent to emerge from the most liberal parts of Islam, or at least the Islamic world. It's both unitarian (belief in one god) and universalist (believing that all religions are part of one greater religion), and it's a religion whose central tenets include racial and gender equality.

Bahá'í personal morality is more strict than what many UUs and Ethical Humanists might enjoy -- premarital sex and consumption of alcohol are both frowned upon, and homosexuality is considered sinful, with no real mechanism for rethinking scriptural stances (an odd flaw for a religion based on the idea of continuous revelation) -- but I include them here because you won't typically see Baha'is working AGAINST the human rights of the LGBT community and because there's enough common ground on human rights issues, in particular, that it's not uncommon to find Bahá'í groups meeting in Unitarian Universalist worship houses in the evening.

Other podcasts

Some of these shows are religion programs explicitly, but many others are news shows that tell stories of everyday people's extraordinary moments and -- as such -- will break your heart or inspire you (or both), make you laugh or cry or think (or all three). All are generally all-ages-appropriate and generally worksafe.

What was it I said about constant reinvention?

As I wrapped up the final entry for the blog (for now -- the last category, the ever-popular "other" where I put things that don't fit in elsewhere), I figured out how to find the URL for a podcast feed if the only link I had was to its iTunes Store listing.

Namely, I subscribe to the show in iTunes, and then once it's there in the listing of my podcasts, I can right-click its name to get a menu of options, one of which is "Copy Podcast URL."

I used this to fix a couple of broken links in the "other" entry (one to the platform addresses of the Ethical Society of Washington, the other to the Massachusetts-based radio show A Baha'i Perspective), but there are a few -- maybe a half-dozen -- other UU podcasts in the listing that currently have links pointing to the iTunes store, accompanied by an apologetic note about the situation.

Those links are fine ... if you use iTunes. But in looking at download patterns for my own music podcasts under the Dancing Mattress Productions label (not all content at said link is safe for work or appropriate for all ages), I see that a lot of people DON'T use iTunes. They use Winamp or Juice or Google Reader or download files directly from their Web browser or stream them INTO the Web browser, or what have you.

So I know I've got some links here that currently limit the audience to users of that one particular piece of software. I'll fix those entries in the coming weeks.

But having JUST gone through literally a couple of thousand Web sites looking for podcasts -- both American congregations related to the Unitarian Universalist Association but also British and other international bodies tied to other organizations -- let me catch a breather first. :)

All the remaining entries have been pre-published and will show up here Monday and Tuesday.

Also coming soon: A page where I'll start posting links to albums of music recorded by the choirs at various UU congregations and to books written by UU authors. I may even get wild and crazy and include DVDs featuring UU actors (so far, I know of Andre Braugher, Betty Buckley and Christopher Reeve).

South Carolina podcasts (repost)

Massachusetts is, of course, the denominational home of the Unitarian Universalist Association. And the Unitarian, Universalist and UU churches in that state are among the oldest in America. Many are named "First Church" or "First Parish" because they're just that -- a given city's oldest congregation, founded either as a Unitarian or Universalist church or converting over from Anglican or Congregationalist.

Additionally, several Massachusetts congregations are "Federated Churches" operated as affiliates of both the Unitarian Universalist Association and at least one other liberal religious movement -- often the United Church of Christ, and in at least one case with both the UCC and the American Baptists. In looking at all UUA-affiliated congregations with a Web presence, such arrangements seem almost unique to New England -- with only one or two instances elsewhere coming to mind.

At least one Unitarian Universalist congregations in Arizona is podcasting its sermons, and another produces a weekly radio program that may be of interest:

Unitarian Universalist Church of Southeastern Arizona (Sierra Vista): Unitarian Universalists of Southeastern Arizona
Unitarian Universalist Church of Surprise (seriously, the town's named Surprise): Congregation produces a local radio show called "A Different View" that is available by podcast; sermons at the Downloadable Sermons and Radio Shows page

The first link is to the congregation's Web site, the second to the RSS feed for the podcast. Right-click address on the podcast's title to copy and paste the feed address into iTunes or the podcast-catching software of your choice.

Some congregations are not doing a podcast -- and in the case of the Tucson congregation, did so in the past but appears to have stopped -- but still make sermons available online for direct downloads:

So, it's been a couple of years since this blog was updated. I just tonight deleted the Gmail account originally linked with this blog; I hadn't checked that e-mail account regularly in at least five months, but if memory serves, it had actually been longer than that.

I'll be re-posting each state's listings as a new entry in coming days, going back over all the congregations state-by-state to look for new podcast feeds, to delete feeds that no longer work at all, to mark feeds that haven't been updated in months or years accordingly, all that stuff.

My life has changed a lot since I was last active with this project; I was laid off earlier this year as part of the ongoing death of the newspaper industry, and in the next few weeks, I'll be relocating from Tennessee to the cradle of Unitarian Universalism, to attend graduate school at Andover Newton Theological School in Newton, Mass., just to the west of Boston. I may open the door toward someone else having author privileges here, if anyone else is crazy enough -- urm, I mean, interested or dedicated enough -- to help keep this a bit more current than I've managed.
